Short Final: A Racy Callsign

Nearly 20 years ago, I was flying Angel Flight trips for people who had to travel for non-emergency medical treatment. These people generally had to travel long distances multiple times per year, and our volunteer flights helped mitigate the expense for them.

I used to fly aeromedical flights, as well.

An elderly recovering patient from Mayo Clinic asked if he could sit up front in the Baron–and I told hm “Yes.” He showed a lot of interest in the airplane, but always addressed me as “Charlie” instead of “Jim.”

The conversation became even stranger, when he asked “Do you have a drinking problem?” Dumbfounded, I replied “NO!”–and asked him why he asked. He replied–"All the people on the radio seem to know you–but I thought you said your name was Jim–why do they call you “Whiskey Charlie?”

I laughed–and told him that “N22WC was the phonetic pronunciation of the registration number on the airplane!” We had a good laugh over his misunderstanding! (smile)
