Originally published at: Sheriff Reports Oregon Cirrus Crash Was Intentional
The pilot was the sole occupant of the SR22T during the five-hour flight.
N625LK did not pull the chute as Cirrus training instructs; parts of the flight were 3,000’AGL or higher. The flight lasted 20:34-01:45Z. During that time, flight tracks show a very interesting route; it appears very erratic. To the right of Bend is where there were many, many circles flown. So many it is very difficult to count. I am not a forensic investigator, so this is just my extrapolation from the data. Since he had altitude and descended too low to pull the chute nut could probably have climbed to chute alt, and he flew 5 hours; I would expect there were no problems with flight controls, and he orbited his last location many times; it seems like this was a controlled flight into terrain, possibly intentional. Somewhere here is a lesson, but that is not showing itself yet.
There has been much discussion in other forums regarding the pilot’s state of mind, all pointing towards suicide. Apparently he was due to be arraigned on several Federal charges, of which I will not detail. Needless to say, the guy was in deep trouble with law enforcement.
