San Diego County Weighs Agua Caliente Airport Reopening

Proposal would examine repairs, funding and a return to operations at the East County airstrip.

According to Wikipedia, the airport has a 2500 foot runway at an elevation of 1220 feet. My peek at Google Maps showed six tie-downs, no separate taxiway, and no buildings. So, bring folding bikes or walk. Which, apparently, many people did.
Does it need to cost seven figures to grind and resurface the pavement?

This airport has now closed. It covered 160 acres (65 ha) and had one runway.
As of May 2014, no aircraft were based at the airport. L54 had no food, fuel or services and limited aircraft parking but no tiedown fees. It was usually a destination for those flying in to visit the geothermally heated Agua Caliente Hot Springs or hike and camp in [Anza-Borrego Desert State Park]
For the 12-month period ending December 31, 2020, the airport had 4400 general aviation aircraft operations, an average of 367 per month or 12 per day, typically transient aircraft.[[5]]

Great to see the spotlight back on this back country strip. There was no reason to close the airport to begin with. The runway needs some work that San Diego county already had funds set aside for. With continued community support it will be great to fly back to Agua Caliente soon.

I’ve used this airport MANY times and there was no need to close it! I attended the Supervisors meeting and intended to speak, but the previous agenda item went well into the afternoon and I had to leave. There are far too few places like this in our backyard, and we can’t afford to loose any of them!
