NTSB Finds No Mechanical Anomalies in Fatal F-51D Crash

The aircraft was producing power and operating normally during an aerobatic practice flight before impact.

Why is this designated as a F-51D and not a P-51D? I believe all of the WW2 fighter aircraft where given P numbers up to and including the P-80 but sometime after WW2 F numbers were used. Maybe this started with the Air Force becoming a separate branch.
