On Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it will begin an audit to assess runway incursion risks at the 45 busiest airports in the U.S.

We already know airport’s risks and potential issues with procedures at our major airports. If we do not, then that’s a damnable Indictment of entire aviation system in the USA.

I agree, Arthur J. Nothing new here.

My old airport, DuPage in Illinois, has had runway incursion meetings with the FAA for years. My new airport, Aurora, IL, has them regularly. Most recently, I attended one for Aurora on Aug 29; representatives from Greater Chicago Region FSDO were very visible in their presence.

Whoever made “the announcement” on behalf of FAA needs to become aware of what’s going on in the Administration.

The near runway incursion incident described in the article occurred at (SAN) in San Diego. It happened because ATC gave takeoff clearance to two different aircraft on that single runway at the same time. The facility is located near the city’s downtown center and has only one relatively short runway. It is now in the middle of a massive project for a new terminal which will add many more flights to this already overburdened airport. It is no surprise that ground safety is compromised when airline profits are made more important.

I presume San Diego is a busy place.

IIRC FAA is hiring more controllers, shortage was a contributing factor in some cases.
Sleepiness of controllers was another.
