Pilots whose diabetes is controlled without insulin could potentially receive medical certificates directly from an AME.
This is great news! I’m glad to see that the FAA has realized things have changed in the past 66 years. Having said that I think that while the FAA is looking at Diabetes, they should also look insulin controlled diabetes (Type 1 and 2) to evaluate if that could also be issued by an AME rather than special issuance, if nothing else at least for a class 3 medical certificate! Needless to say things have changed with insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring in the past 66 years.
