The FAA announced on February 10 it will be updating aeronautical charts and databases to include the names The Gulf of America and Mount McKinley, replacing the Gulf of Mexico and Denali, respectively. The agency advised it is in the process of updating charts and databases, changes that will be targeted for the next publication cycle.
With all the big tech names joining those who bend the knee to the new US king we now find ourselves in what has classically been known as the Bermuda Triangle for which a name change is a no brainer.
I wonder if the US realizes how much this so-called show of American āgreatnessā is just going to lead to confusion. Though the United States is the authority to name features within its country boundaries however it wants (Mount McKinley), the US is the only country that is renaming this international body of water. The rest of the world, universally, will continue to call it the Gulf of Mexico, as it has been called for 500 years.
It is the hallmark of politicians like Trump and his imitators around the world to address topics of such supreme importance with all due expediency. Unfortunately the Roman wisdom that ābread and spectaclesā are sufficient to keep the masses from revolting still holds true and it doesnāt speak in our favor that renaming exercises are enough of a spectacle to work. Poor Beechcraft has a tough decision ahead.
Dealt with this kind of non-sense while flying in the Middle East. There is a body of water broadly known as the Persian Gulf. Thatās except for the Arab countries there (i.e. Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE) who insist on calling it the Arabian Gulf. The Iranians, of course, call it the Persian Gulf. A lot of emotion goes into this.
Ultimately, itās all silly. Itās still a big, warm, very salty body of water which includes territorial waters and international waters. Some people, for that reason, just call it āThe Gulfā.
The great thing about the comments here is the deafening silence of the traditionalists who - just yesterday - called the manipulation of language that led to āNotice to Air Missionsā a Marxist and Communist plot by a nefarious administration.
So, this unnecessary renaming of the body of water that is universally known as the Gulf of Mexico is what, exactly? Is it something other than a crass political maneuver intended to glorify a political actor? What, exactly is the improvement in safety or efficiency that results?
The responses to two articles about what we call things could not be more illuminating.
For once, I agree with AJ. Iām just grateful he didnāt want to rename it the āGulf of Floridaā. But given the massive real issues facing the current administration, this is a classic case of āthe Boss donāt like the soup 'til he spits in itā.
I donāt recall AP whining over Biden changing the name of nine military bases. At least one of these, Ft. Bragg, has reverted to its original name. To the victor, go the spoils.
Hegsbeth didnt change the name back to confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg. He changed it to Private First Class Roland L. Bragg from WWII.
its because people who dont know how to read past the first sentence dont realize that even Trump/Hegsbeth dont want to honor a bunch of traitors, but they know their base wont read enough to understand that they were tricked, again.
Well, I live very near Ft. Bragg and I of course know the official announcement on the ānewā Bragg. Weāre all getting a good laugh over the reaction. General Braxton Bragg was a great leader and loyal to his homeland, the sovereign states of NC and TN. Few except the rare far lefties around here ever called it Ft. Liberty. Ft. Braxton Bragg forever!
A waste of taxpayer dollars, but at least this effort to expand US control over territory outside its present borders is cheaper than taking over Canada, Greenland or the Panama Canal.

No, he changed it back to āFort Braggā.

And do you actually believe that Trump/Hegsbeth are seeking to honor a WW II private whose most distinguishing feature is his name?
