Well, not ‘clean sheet’ configuration - is copy of the Canso/Catalina ocean patrol airplane from WWII.
Which as used extensively in fighting forest fires, and sight-seeing after the war.

As for sea rescue, how does it compare with the Shin Maywa US-2?

Stories of uses of the Catalina include:

  • seaplane version used by Australia to mine harbours in SE Asia, painted all black
  • ‘Double Sunrise’ services to get mail and a few key people from Australia to locations from where they could safely be flown to England. Stories vary, the route varied.
