Canada-U.S. Flight Bookings Drop Dramatically

Both Canadian and U.S. airlines who offer trans border flights are trimming those schedules and cancelling flights in the face of a 70 percent drop in bookings especially from the northern side of the border. A nationwide surge in patriotism, thanks to tariff threats and threats by President Donald Trump to force Canada to become the "51st state" have seen Canadian bookings to the U.S. drop precipitously. Airline market analyst OAG said a total of 320,000 seats have been dropped from schedules through October and more might be cut. In April, bookings dropped from 1.2 million in 2024 to a little less than 300,000 in April of this year. The pattern continues through October.

What an unfortunate turn of events brought upon by one individual and his sheep. We regularly travel GA to the Bahamas through red states from Canada. This year we have cancelled for two reasons. The political crushing of our currency due to unwarranted tariffs. And the real threat of our aircraft being vandalized at a GA airport along the way. Pretty sad state of affairs after all Canada has done (9/11 etc etc) for what used to be a great neighbour. Sorry, not sorry.

Sad times for me as an American. I side with our wonderful neighbor, Canada.

Strange, I do not see aircraft being vandalized in any states. Do you have a reference that supports your fear? Serious question. Thanks.

Results of America’s only form of diplomacy…”My way or the highway “ tariffs. Not only embarrassing to us Americans, we will have to pay ridiculous ever increasing prices for everything we do not produce…which is less than we consume. Ludicrous way of “reducing” inflation, opening and maintaining supply chains, increasing availability, and fostering harmony with our northern neighbors. Hey Russ… I am sure you have few comments regarding this “art of the deal” since you reside on the northern side of the fence. Gonna be a lot of airplanes not flying with a 70% reduction of bookings.

One thing most Canadians agree on is that the last decade has been a disgraceful failure in terms of defense spending and N.A.T.O. commitments. We’re in the middle of an election at present and things will change one way or another. Keeping my fingers crossed.

As a Minnesotan–we consider ourselves “almost Canadians”–we share a love for the open spaces of the outdoors, but on the negative side, we share the cost and social stress of big-government programs (supported by big city liberals) with our Canadian friends.

I’m a pilot, and make many trips a year to Canada, taking people on vacation to hunt, fish, or simply to enjoy the wilderness in areas that offer “lower population density, and the low-stress living that comes with it.”

Our Canadian friends routinely travel “south of the border” to the U.S. on shopping trips–looking for goods that may not be available in Canada–and often at lower prices. I believe that BOTH the U.S. and Canada benefit from the ability to freely spend time and money in areas where these qualities of life are appreciated. I believe that BOTH the U.S. and Canada have more in common with North/South life than they do with East/West–Washington State and British Columbia–the Upper Midwest and the Prairie Provinces–and the U.S. East Coast and the Canadian Maritimes have more in common than they have in differences.

Tariffs are yet another intrusion to commerce by government–I would rather do without them and let commerce AND THE PEOPLE ACTUALLY INVOLVED settle “what is fair”–but isn’t practical in countries where government purports to be the arbiter in our lives.

Where would you be without the “big city liberals” in your fantasy land?

Here’ a new concept for treatment of liberal delusion—it is called REALITY!

Let me help you with your reality problem…

Look at a map of Minnesota county voting records for the last election. True to history, most of the 87 counties in Minnesota voted conservative. THE EXCEPTIONS WERE THE TWIN CITIES METRO AREA, AND THE “ARROWHEAD” ENCOMPASSING DULUTH.

The leftist control of the legislature due to the number of representatives from the Metro area has resulted in disenfranchising the rest of the state.

Those of us with homes in counties bordering Wisconsin, Iowa, and North and South Dakota are seeing an exodus to those conservative States—while Minnesota wallows in the liberal slime-pit of the Metro area—including liberal Senators, Representatives, and Governor Walz ((who suffered the embarrassment of a trouncing in his run for the Vice Presidency.

IF you believe in a “Socialist Paradise”—there are a lot of homes available for you here in liberal Minnesota—as people abandon the State.

Reality? Give us a break, please. This is all a bunch of delusional diarrhea and wishful thinking. Parroting what the people on Fox News and your bubble tell you doesn’t make it any more real.

Isn’t this supposed to be an aviation forum? Seems like a bunch of angry people frothing about their disconnected from reality right wing viewpoints.

How about this reality? The combined population of North and South Dakota is under 2 million people. The population of California is almost 40 million. Combined North and South Dakota have 4 senators to represent them in the senate, and California, with 20 times the number of people has 2.
