Caller Claims to Have Fired at Aircraft Near Colo. Airport

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Department in Colorado, along with several other agencies including the FBI and the FAA, is investigating whether or not someone has been shooting at aircraft operating at Vance Brand Longmont Municipal Airport (KLMO). A city employee called the sheriff’s office to report a voicemail message from a caller who claimed to have fired at an aircraft (described as an “ultralight”). The sheriff’s department reported it has been in contact with a person of interest, but has not released that person’s identity, “pending additional investigation.”

Thank you for covering this - it is an appalling and embarrassing development at our beautiful airport. We’ll get it wrangled so y’all can feel safe coming to visit us!

Boulder County is adjacent to Broomfield County. This website has published articles on Rocky Mountain Metro Airport (KBJC), and the effort of nearby residents to close that airport. I have attended townhall meetings on the subject of noise and lead complaints by residents in the area, including residents in Boulder County. From my first-hand experience, I can safely state that there are residents at those townhalls who are unstable enough to shoot at aircraft. The most vocal complainers will not tolerate anything less than everyone adopting their point of view. Therefore, nothing about this event in Boulder County surprises me.

Update: It appears the call was real, but the threat involved a “starter pistol” that was incapable of firing live ammunition.
