Best Of The Web: Instant Runway

When the pilot of a legacy Cessna 172C had a fuel system issue over Ohio farm country last week, Joe Bauman's field became a lifesaver. The Reynoldsville farmer became a plane saver when he smoothed a section of the field to allow the pilot to take off in the repaired airplane the next day.

All in a days work for Mr. Bauman. Great story!

Joe Bauman was using a disk harrow not a plow but good work.

I was about to make the same comment. Congrats to AvWeb for “smoothing” and not “plowing”. Plowed fields are not airplane friendly. Looks like he may have a cultimulcher on the rear of that thing too.

Apparently not too soft for takeoff.

Definitely a good place to practice your soft field takeoff procedures!
