Article on pilot knives

The “Share Your Thoughts” link produced an “Oops” message so I am posting here. I only looked at the article’s “rescue” knife including its link to an example on Amazon. One of the things I used to do for a living was emergency and survival equipment for military aircrews, including knives. I would not risk my ability to egress an aircraft in an emergency using a $32 knife. Yes you need a recessed seat belt razor cutter. Trying to cut yourself loose with an open blade while hanging upside down in a developing fire or while submerging is a good way to badly injure yourself with that open blade. Also, aircraft windows don’t shatter as auto glass does when struck hard with a sharp pointed handle tip. Your knife should have one, but you can’t just hammer away at an aircraft window with it. You must score an outline in the plexiglass/perspex/whatever it happens to be that is big enough to crawl through using your knife breakout tip, then strike your scored area repeatedly with your elbow or something hard and sturdy to remove the scored section. I won’t delve into the survival performance requirements we had to meet but I can tell you most knives we tested failed one or more of them. The few that met them were rugged and of high quality, and their price reflected that. None cost less than $100, and that was years ago.
