On Thursday a Tropic Air flight in Belize was hijacked by a U.S. man who reportedly stabbed two passengers and a pilot before being fatally shot, according to an AP report.
That is HORRIBLE!
I have been on their airplanes and even got a free ride for having flown a 208 before and getting promoted to copilot.
Thank God everyone on board isn’t dead.
Too bad someone wasn’t carrying a concealed pistol on the 9/11 hijacks. If a crew person, great. If a properly vetted civilian … that would have worked too. FWIW, TSA doesn’t catch all the scammers who pass through the lines. All it takes is one miss of a wanna be perp.
Some pax have managed to get onboard without tickets, recently. Fortunately caught as cabin was fully booked, some tried to hide in lavatory.
Need profiling which worked after hijackings in 1970s before physical inspections, and worked for Israel’s airline for decades.
An example was a young woman flying to Israel for a vacation, checkin staff found a bomb in bottom of her carryon satchel. Her boyfriend’s way of eliminating her pregnancy.
No need, post 9-11 the passengers will bite a hijacker to death if they have to. The idea that if you just cooperate everything will be fine is long gone.
Actually, several things come to mind. A hypothetical example is:
what do you work at?
how can you afford the flight?
you say your boyfriend paid for your ticket, didn’t he want to accompany you?
Decision for secondary inspection, search of luggage, and even rejection for flight will be based on sum of observations then a conservative decision to be safe.
It has worked well for el Al, its staff and Israel’s are probably better trained than Canadian and American border agents who in my experience are variable in ability and training.
Need people at your tiny airport to be aware of who is about.
Engage in conversation.
Perhaps there is a use for what irritates me - cashier or receptionist asking how I am today, and evaluating reaction.
Or asking an odd question to throw troubled person off track.
