The Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation (JRBAF) announced a new partnership with Patagonia Bush Pilots, allowing U.S. pilots the opportunity to train and fly in the Patagonia region of South America.
Patagonia is one of those places that feels like it belongs in a dream–vast, untamed, and full of mystery. A backcountry aviation training program there isn’t just an opportunity; it’s an invitation to dance with the wind over some of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. The thought of setting down on a remote airstrip, with nothing but raw wilderness in every direction, is enough to make any pilot’s hands twitch toward the controls.
For me, at 82, the timing is a little off–this particular adventure will have to stay in the realm of admiration rather than experience. But I can’t help but imagine taking it on, riding the Patagonian skies on Rocinante, a 7AC Champ I used to fly, chasing horizons where the mountains meet the wind.
