Normalizing Deviance - AVweb

Come visit Caldwell KEUL during nice weather for a full display of normalized deviance. A fixed wing pattern full of training aircraft and the one full length taxiway operating as another runway 400’ centerline to centerline. Airplanes and helicopters jockey for use of the taxiway. All that isn’t interesting enough, so add some jumpers to the mix.
Pilot reactions vary:

  1. I’ll never come here again
  2. I’m invincible, a collision won’t happen to me
  3. resignation, nothing will change until someone dies
  4. anti-authority, it’s a uncontrolled airport. I’ll fly how I want. We don’t need no freaking tower.

Thank you for sharing a great input! I’ve also been flying 55 years—fighters, airlines, GA twins— and I agree with you 100%. And, I’ve lost many friends…

So glad you survived that accident. Are you still flying air shows?

We’ve known for decades that’s the most dangerous pilots in the world are doctors in a v-tail bonanza with get-home-itess, stretching low fuel, and no surprise killing the whole family. AND, jet fighter pilots in an underpowered prop trying to scud run under an overcast in a high terrain valley. Both have the same results. These pilots end up being the first one’s at the scene of multiple-fatal accidents. Some things never change.
