Lawmakers Request Answers On NOTAM Outages

The cynic in me can’t help wondering if the NOTAM system would work a bit better if it had fewer garbage NOTAMs in it. In preparation for a flight yesterday, I was reviewing the NOTAMs in my briefing, and one struck me. It was for an unlighted tower at 210’ MSL (128’ AGL), 10.1nm NW of the airport. If I’m at 128’ AGL 10 miles from the airport, I think I have bigger problems.

Much of the FAA and fedgov in general have unique and expensive requirements that prevent anything easy and cheap, usually for good reason.
IMHO the NOTAM system is not one. It is the very definition of what a relational database is. It should be well within the capabilities of a SQL or Oracle team to set up and mirror across enough redundant servers for five nines.

  • full disclosure, I have set up databases for different agencies including the FAA in the past, I have a fair idea what they can and can’t do. NOTAMs is as close to a perfect app for a database as I can think of.
