As a former Army attack helicopter pilot and current major airline captain I have to say that if we don’t want to see this happen again we must enforce new rules that will prevent it from happening. As a republican leaning independent I naturally chafe at the suggestion that more government mandated regulations are necessary but as a professional pilot that has seen how cheap aviation management can get its the only way. If you’re going to hold yourself out as a company that carries passengers for hire in a helicopter you’re going to have to send your pilots to regular simulator training. Just as we do in the airlines and just like we did in the military.
Additionally I cannot help but think how much of a different outcome could have been garnered by having a second pilot in that cockpit. Again just as we do in both the airlines and the military - are you starting to see a pattern yet ?
