The washout is closer to or over 50% through the entire three years.
This is a quote from FAA.gov, specifically under “Aviation Careers”: “This elite group of more than 14,000 FAA air traffic control specialists provide a vital public service to guide pilots, their planes and 2.7 million daily passengers from taxi to takeoff, through the air and back safely on the ground.”
Do the math, and your hiring goals aren’t nearly enough.
I know I said I’d be done, but since I was addressed directly…
14,000 controllers actually makes things better. The average 20 year career means 700 replacements per year. Add 70 new positions for 770 successful trainees. Even at 50% attrition, that means only 1,540 new recruits per year.
Oh yeah… check out previous and current ATC hiring plans on FAA.gov and you’ll see that your “ideas” are ver py close to the same models formulated, designed, employed, tweaked, thrown out, and brought back off and on for years…and where are we? Real world it ain’t…
Why? The lack of all that seems to be perfectly acceptable. Pretending competence and insider’s knowledge in complex technical matters and business acumen for an online audience—aka fake it until you make it—with no regard for the consequences of misinformation and disinformation has become the national pastime. And not just in aviation.
Not only do you seem very confident that there will be pressure to behave badly and that people will succumb to that pressure wrt training and evaluation, you imply that they may have already done so with the recruitment effort. Insulting and unwarranted, but easy when you don’t actually know any of them and the internet shields you with anonymity. And there’s no defense against such maligning. You can “absolutely hope that …this does not happen here” but the damage is already done. As Mark Twain said, “A lie travels half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” No wonder that people get nasty in defending their work ethic.
There is always “pressure to behave badly” in agencies because officials’ power and careers are implicated. Why are you so emotionally invested in this issue? You could simply try to have a civil discussion of a subject that is very important without the angry attacks. If you did that what you say would be more credible. By the way. I have no need for anonymity. If you, or anyone else is offended by my opinions, so be it.
