The interesting thing here is that I’ve never seen any explanation about where Duffy’s Grand Plan came from. It proposes consolidating 20 centers down to six. Well, OK…why six? Which six? Same six locations, or six new locations? Selected how? Diversity of service provision matters - over-consolidation is a risk. I worked on a failure that completely took out LA Center for hours, and SoCal TRACON picked up a lot of the traffic. Years before, there was a plan to move SCT into LA Center’s building. If that had happened, they would have both cratered. Getting all this stuff done in three years is, um, really optimistic. Doing it right in three years is dramatically optimistic. We’ll see…
Two “Super” Centers … What could possibly go wrong? One goes down, and it will, is the other going to cover everything? I’m guessing it is easier to suggest it than to have it work!
