On the DA42 “slowly increased manifold pressure to keep shock cooling to a minimum”. First, it’s a liquid-cooled engine, so shock cooling is not a factor. Secondly, if a sudden temperature change were even a factor, advancing the throttle would result in “shock heating” not cooling.

I wondered about that as well. Is that procedure in the POH? But an internet search shows Diamond has a version with Lycoming IO-360s “intended for the North American training market.” That was news to me, though I don’t pay much attention to news about twins. Maybe that was the model involved.

I was thinking that if one was to practice an engine out procedure, wouldn’t one do so A: At a higher altitude, and B: At or around either an open area or an airport? Just in case something like this might happen?
