These days, almost every air-transport accident reads something like this: “Modern aircraft are so comprehensively computer-operated as to have pretty much reduced “pilots” to being not much more than the be-costumed monitors of a lot of expensive airborne electronics. The people in the pilot costumes in the pointy bit of the aeroplane are almost never required to actually fly the airplane. This was one of those occasions when a pilot was needed but when the emergency occurred it was quickly obvious there were none on board … So the airplane crashed.”
