There is a problem with definitions in the opening paragraph of this article, which I quote,
“… that a backlog of preliminary accident reports should soon begin to be cleared, including the Icon A5 accident that killed baseball star Roy Halladay on Nov. 7, 2017. Twenty-six months later, the NTSB has announced no official probable cause on that probe.”
The preliminary report on this accident was issued on a timely basis. It’s the final report that has not been issued.

Observation: I had flown with my father regularly when he was a private pilot. He was a safe pilot that practiced drills, flight exercises, and flight maneuvers to stay fresh and competent. He did NOT take stupid risks, did not fly in unsafe weather and was in my opinion, a careful pilot. Of course, he spoke of the overly used cliche’, “There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no Old, Bold pilots”. It seems too many in the aviation community are afraid to admit that a majority of fatal crash accidents are due to showing off, recklessness and the inability to give the art of flying the respect that it requires.

You know, when it comes to accident investigation the speed of the investigation really shouldn’t be a priority. Too much emphasis on getting done in a hurry could lead to shortcuts and that great American pastime of “jumping to conclusions”.

This seems like a huge joke. This guy comes on here bashing “investigators” talking about how they are in need of remedial training. The most premier investigation group in the world, one that everyone else looks to for guidance and support, has a weakness that he’s going to fix. I helped on an NTSB investigation a couple years ago in AZ and I was blown away by the particular attention to detail they gave to every aspect of the crash. Maybe he should go back to the private industry because he isn’t cut out for public service. I wonder if this guy has ever investigated a real crash before…

Interesting subject.
Back in my airline days, seems that when a carrier went down, it was NOT long
for the final report to come out.
Case in point - When Air Florida went down in the Potomac R, I didn’t think it was very long when it was reported that the engine & cowl heat was NOT on which caused a PT2 freeze over & bad EPR readout. This went out to every carrier.
Airline incident/accidents causes should be reported in a timely manor as thousands of movements/day & this may effect some.

It “seems” that way or you actually mined the data to prove a factual point??
Also, since we’re talking about facts, the NTSB issues very timely information when it pertains to critical safety issues they find. Just because the full report isn’t published doesn’t mean the info isn’t getting out there right away.

Excuse me, but we now have the two extremes of an aging fleet combined with the latest high-tech planes. That means lots of new issues coming up with older planes and lots of teething issues with new planes.
